About Me

I am an ESL Teacher with more than 30 years of experience in various education environments.

I am bilingual in English and Italian.

I teach ESL learners how to develop their skills in presentations, interviews, daily conversations, reading, listening and writing.

I am an expert in English phonetics and phonology, which I teach.

As a linguist, I developed an interest in etymology, which I teach on request, specially related to English words.

I teach the following CAMBRIDGE QUALIFICATIONS AND COURSES:

      a. B2 FIRST (formerly FCE)
      b. C1 ADVANCED (formerly CAE)
      c. IELTS

b. syntax → how to create well-formed sentences
c. word order → how to determine the proper sequence of words
d. spelling → how to form words with the correct letters in the correct order
e. punctuation → how to show pauses and questions, separate phrases and sentences and indicate the emphasis on some thoughts and ideas in order to help the writer convey the message and the reader understand the meaning of it

PRONUNCIATION

CONVERSATION

a. practising language → in my classes students are asked to discuss tasks and ideas, communicate needs, give opinions on different subjects, ask questions, clarify their own understanding, speak about themselves
b. improving a student’s speaking skills → conversation is the ability to show what a student learnt

Plus

COLLOCATIONS

a.word partnerships → a collocation is a combination of words which frequently occur together

b. how words work together → appropriate handling of collocations helps learners sound more precise, more natural and more accurate

IDIOMS

a.fixed expressions in everyday conversation → an idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that has a figurative meaning conventionally fixed and understood by native speakers

b. using idioms to sound natural and fluent → I help students learn and understand idioms by organising them in a proper context

HOW TO USE A DICTIONARY

a.no bilingual dictionaries → most ESL learners use bilingual dictionaries because they desperately want translations. Actually, just translating an English word into your own language is useless. It’s a passive, fruitless effort

b.I provide guidance to learners on how to use a monolingual dictionary only

By using a monolingual dictionary you can

-find out grammatical information about a word

-find the synonyms and antonyms of a word

-look up the collocations of a word

In other words, you have to think in English

FORMAL VS INFORMAL REGISTER

a.using the appropriate register for the appropriate context → most ESL learners cannot associate the formal and informal language with particular choices of grammar, vocabulary and collocation

b.understanding registers → how to use different registers in different contexts
